Sex-Change Surgery

Not always so. Before it was a woman who felt trapped in the body of a man and his was one of the first sex-change operations that took place in Cuba in a long time, since the practice was discontinued decades ago amid controversies and prejudices .

His case reflects the profound changes taking place in an old Cuban society characterized by machismo and intolerance towards homosexuality and transgender people, driven largely by Mariela Castro, daughter of Raúl Castro and niece of Fidel.

Two years ago, Gonzalez was a pioneer in the island to undergo a surgical sex change after a decision of the Ministry of Health of the island re-authorized after almost 20 of interruption.

Gonzalez, who stands 1.83 meters (six feet) had no doubt when presented to the hospital would be operated by Cuban doctors and Belgians. For years he was subjected to all sorts of medical tests and psychological controls to help you make your decision.

They said the operation was risky, but I told my mom that I’d rather be dead or dying in the operating room before continue. I said  Do not worry Mom, do not get nervous if something happens to me or I die, I die happy, ”’said Gonzalez, a professional pianist, in an emotional interview.

Although authorities do not want to give the official figure, some people familiar with the matter indicated that they made at least eight sex changes (male to female) since it came into force the new standard in 2008.

Before his speech, Gonzalez felt bad all the time, with strong depressive states: was   prey prey within my own body,”said the woman, who always had the support of his family, especially his mother and his brothers.

From small Gonzalez was treated by doctors until the beginning of the decade was referred to the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) directed by Mariela Castro, who for years has championed diversity and respect for these people.

Even before the parliament promoted a civil code – still under consideration – allowing gay unions and even the police gave courses to raise awareness regarding the situation of transvestites and transsexuals.
